Union Water Supply Corporation receives Federal Grant

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Starr County has received a grant from Congressman Henry Cuellar for a second water source to aid with its ongoing drought issues.

The grant is over $9,000,000 will not only add a second water source but also enable Union Water Supply Corporation to end its need to lease water from other providers.

"We're looking for alternative sources of water where they can drill a new well, they can go ahead and take any action to provide a secondary source of water," said Cuellar. "Right now there are millions of people that depend on both the Mexican side and the U.S. side on the Rio Grande."

This will increase drought resilience, create jobs and foster further growth for Starr County.

The project was made possible by the Bureau of Reclamations WaterSMART Drought Response Program, one of its Drought Resiliency Projects for Fiscal Year 2024.
