PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Transportation held a public meeting on Tuesday to hear input from residents on a road expansion project.

The proposal outlines over $100 million in changes to Jackson Road in Pharr, one of the busiest roads in the city.

TxDOT hosted their event at Kennedy Middle School for residents to learn more about the project.

Public Information Officer Ray Pedraza said, “To widen Jackson Road, this is between State Highway 495 and Hall Acres Roadcities of McAllen and Pharr. A very busy stretch of roadway; the stretch of roadway sees upwards of 36,000 vehicles a day.”

Pedraza said the project would widen three and a half miles of road, and that their current roadway cannot meet the existing volumes.

"We’re proposing to widen it into a six-lane roadway. Three lanes in each direction with a raised median also bicycle and pedestrian pathways.”

TxDOT says its goal is to begin construction in the summer of 2027.
