Two Weslaco residents are dead after driving at speeds of more than 100 mph through Laguna Vista before crashing into an electrical transformer in Port Isabel.
Authorities said 20-year-old Fernando Garcia and 19-year-old Hazel Castaneda died in the crash.
At around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, the Port Isabel Police Department was advised by a Laguna Vista Police officer to look out for a white Dodge Charger traveling eastbound on State Highway 100 at a high rate of speed.
“Radar indicated that the vehicle was traveling in excess of 100 MPH at the time,” the release said.
Command staff told Port Isabel officers not to engage the Charger, but to position themselves in a safe manner and activate emergency lights.
As the Charger entered Port Isabel, a police unit in the 1900 block of State Highway 100 observed the vehicle traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, according to the release.
“Shortly thereafter, a flash of light was observed by the officers who came upon a single vehicle accident located at the 700 block of W SH 100,” the release said.
The crash caused damage to an electrical transformer which disrupted portions of the city for several hours.
Port Isabel Volunteer Fire and EMS departments responded to the incident.
The crash remains under investigation.
