EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Texas A&M School of Public Health on Saturday hosted a Mental Health Awareness in Colonias event.

The event was held at the P2 Community Resource Center at 509 E. Earling Rd, where health screening, flu shots, and educational presentations took place.

Other activities took place at the event such as counseling information sessions, mental health resources, family activities such as painting, cookie decorating, and a raffle contest.

"The assignment is a fun and engaging way for students to learn course concepts through real-world application," said Dr. Krystal Flores-Chavez "My hope is that students walk away feeling inspired by the work they accomplished and well-equipped to pursue other service opportunities in the field of public health."

Organizers added the reason for the event is to normalize having conversations surrounding mental health and build connections within families.
