The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine will be hosting its monthly student-run clinic in Peñitas on Saturday, a training effort that has also helped more than 200 patients with health care since its inception.
The clinic, which is located at 17617 Sabal Palm Drive in Peñitas, will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The goal of the student-run clinic is to provide “free healthcare to underserved communities,” in the Valley by providing comprehensive primary care, labs, chronic disease management, and preventative medicine.
The clinic also hopes to provide health education and outreach initiatives to help further address the “unique socio-economic challenges,” in colonias across the Valley.
The student-run clinic, which has been providing care for Valley residents for the past six years, works in partnership with Proyecto Desarrollo Humano, a nonprofit organization that focuses on delivering quality care with the help of volunteer healthcare professionals.
The clinic was recently awarded a $40,000 grant to help continue to address health needs in the area as well as implement the UTRGV Dietetics program to offer nutritional guidance for patients.
Although the clinic is currently only held once a month they hope to expand their services in the near future to twice a month.
