MERCEDES, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The South Texas Independent School District is offering high school students with special needs an opportunity to enhance their skills.
The district's new Half-Day Program is an opportunity for special needs students across the Valley to enroll in career and technology courses at South Texas ISD.
"This gives them [students] an opportunity to come and partake in a current technology educational program that may not be offered in their district and to be exposed to an area of interest," said Cynthia De La Garza Gonzalez, South Texas ISD Special Education Coordinator.
The career and technology courses that are offered at South Texas ISD grant the opportunity for students to earn industry-based certifications for future use.
"That [certification] will get them workforce ready or post-secondary ready so that they know what they want to do once they graduate high school," Gonzalez continued.
South Texas ISD offers the following courses as part of the Half-Day Program:
- Manufacturing
- Automotive
- Health Sciences
- Public Service Programs
South Texas ISD will host an information session for the community to educate families about the district's Half-Day Program.
The free information session will be open to the public from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 27 at the South Texas ISD Teaching & Learning Center located on 7001 E. Expressway 83 in Mercedes.
