The Progreso Red Ants took down the Alvarado Indians 1-0 on Saturday to capture the champion during the Sulphur Springs Elite 4A Invitational at Gerald Prim Stadium in Sulphur Springs.

The victory sends a statement across the state, with the Red Ants establishing themselves as a state title contender against a field which included former state champion Palestine and two-time state qualifier Celina.

Progreso, who was making its second appearance at the tournament, dethrones Celina as the tournament’s champion, with the Wildcats winning the previous two titles.

The Red Ants opened the tournament with a convincing 2-0 win over Palestine on Thursday night. They followed it up with a 1-0 victory over Celina on Friday morning, adding a 4-1 win over Perryton in the evening to secure the No. 1 seed in their pool and a spot in Saturday’s semifinals.

Saturday’s semifinal matched the Red Ants against tournament host Sulphur Springs, taking down the Wildcats 1-0 to advance to the championship game.

In the finals, Progreso outlasted Alvarado 1-0 to earn the tournament’s championship. The Red Ants have two weeks remaining in their non-district slate before opening District 31-4A play on Jan. 17.
