PALMVIEW, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A 5-year-old boy who was hit by a car on New Year's Eve, died from injuries on Saturday, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
At approximately 8:49 p.m. on Dec. 31, DPS troopers responded to an auto-pedestrian crash on Abram Road, south of FM Loop 374 in Palmview.
According to a preliminary report, a black Buick Envista was occupied by a driver, later identified as 25-year-old Lizbeth Samantha De La Cruz Gonzalez of Palmview, and a child. Moments before the accident the 5-year-old was crossing the streets when the Buick hit him.
A witness told ValleyCentral, she noticed the boy’s mother in the street screaming that he was still alive.
The child, identified as Antonio Ray Solis of Mission, was taken to the McAllen Medical Center, where he died from his injuries on Jan. 4.
Liz Garnett lives in the area and says the lack of lights makes the streets dangerous.
Authorities say Gonzalez showed signs of intoxication and was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years of age and possession of a controlled substance.
However, she has not been charged with striking the boy.
De La Cruz has been booked into the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Center and issued a bond of $25,000.
