MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — McAllen Public Library is partnering with South Texas College to offer free GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes starting Oct. 13 at various library locations in McAllen.
The classes aim to help qualifying students improve their English skills or earn a high school equivalency diploma. ESL classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Main Library and the Palm View Branch Library, while GED classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lark Branch Library.
"Hosting these classes is one more way we can connect our community to free educational opportunities," said Kate Horan, Library Director.
Mayor Javier Villalobos noted, "Education opens doors for our residents, and programs like these help families grow stronger while creating more opportunities for McAllen's workforce and future."
The ESL program includes 80 hours of instruction, a free textbook, and online learning resources, catering to all levels from beginner to advanced. Students must register online, as space is limited.
The GED program provides step-by-step preparation for the High School Equivalency exam, with all materials and instruction offered at no cost. Registration is required.
For more information or to register, interested individuals can call the Information Desk at (956) 681-3061.
These educational programs represent an investment in the community's success, providing accessible tools for lifelong learning and personal development.
