United States Customs and Border Protection officers at the Pharr International Bridge took a Mexican citizen in custody after discovering that he attempted to export “several thousand rounds of ammunition cartridges in various calibers.”

Oscar Daniel Ramirez Gonzalez, who was born in 1969, was also in possession of four bottles of smokeless black gunpowder and gun parts. He was arrested on Saturday.

Ramirez Gonzalez was driving a gold Chevrolet Equinox that day as he attempted to exit the U.S. to Mexico at the Pharr International Bridge when he was referred to an outbound inspection, according to a criminal complaint.

During a secondary inspection, officers discovered multiple firearm parts and ammunition components.

“These items included one upper receiver, one lower receiver, approximately four bottles of what appeared to be smokeless black gunpowder, and several thousand rounds of ammunition cartridges in various calibers,” the complaint said.

The items were discovered hidden in the Equinox’s center console, the trunk side panel compartments and in the spare tire compartment located under the floor of the vehicle’s trunk, according to the complaint.

In an interview with Homeland Security Investigations special agents, Ramirez Gonzalez admitted to possessing the firearm parts and ammunition found in the vehicle, referring to the items as “prohibited merchandise.”

Ramirez Gonzalez appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nadia S. Medrano in McAllen federal court Tuesday morning for his initial appearance.
