SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A number of businesses on South Padre Island took precautions to protect their property in case Tropical Storm Beryl made landing in the Rio Grande Valley.

All along the busy streets, businesses boarded up their windows with plywood. Many homeowners did the same.

On the city beaches, there were only a handful of tourists Sunday morning watching the powerful waves and seagulls.

Cameron County announces five beach closures

Cameron County officials closed several beaches in the county to vehicles as high tides will make driving on those beaches very dangerous.

They are expected to be reopened on Monday at 9 a.m.

“We continue to ask that all individuals be cautious when visiting our beaches and heed the advice of the lifeguards as well as the Flag Advisory System Signage at all times,” said Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. in a news release.

Isla Blanca Park and Andy Bowie Park remain open.
