Hurricane season taking another swipe at Valley

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Hurricane season 2024 is revving and expected to drop into overdrive soon.

Hurricane Debby just slammed Florida, now another area of interest is showing signs of intensifying as it moves west across the Caribbean and eventually the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico later this week.

The area of low pressure has a 30% chance of further development. The real question is; where will it go?

High pressure over the eastern US will keep it moving more westerly toward Veracruz Mexico, well south of the RGV. A forecast trough (cold front) nudging the high eastward, taking its place, would then pull the new tropical event north toward Louisiana. Either solution is possible and not likely to show itself for a couple more days. It is also possible the system could steer somewhere in the middle and that could include Deep South Texas.

It is certain the developing tropical system will encounter more favorable conditions later this week with warm sea surface temperatures and conducive mid layer and upper level winds.

Remember, there is a long way to go with this hurricane season. We are just getting started.
