WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Thursday night at the 700 block of N. Pueblo St. in Weslaco.
Police said around 11:28 responded to the location of an officer-involved shooting (OIS) involving the Weslaco Police Department.
When police arrived they encountered an armed Hispanic man who reached for a shotgun. In response to the perceived threat, one of the officers discharged their weapon, striking the man.
Medical assistance Officers immediately provided medical assistance before the male was transported by ambulance to Knapp Medical Center where he died.
The man was identified as Juan Diego Contreras, 22 from Weslaco. An area Justice of the Peace has ordered an autopsy.
Weslaco Police have requested the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a thorough investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
