Flies buzzing over beef, 26 violations at BBQ spot

ALAMO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — In this week’s Food 4 Thought we are heading to a BBQ spot with a noticeable fly issue that has until the end of the year to get it handled.

First, we surprised the team at Cabo Bar and Grille located at 2301 Business Highway 77 in San Benito.

They scored a 100 on their Oct. 3 inspection report, making them this week’s Top Performer.

Owner Gary Gonzalez is not shocked but thankful for the recognition and showed the Food Patrol its signature dishes and sauces.

Angie is the bartender at the restaurant and says a lot of people order the Camaron Elegante with Cabo Sauce or the Chipotle Sauce.

Angie says the dishes are paired best with an old-fashioned or a good Mexican martini.

That’s que rico! But it’s que asco time!

The Food Patrol is headed to Willie’s Bar B Que located at 320 South Alamo Road in Alamo.

Its Oct. 17 Hidalgo County Health Inspection Report showed 26 violations such as:

  • Off-temperature cold and hot food
  • Dirty cutting boards
  • Dirty food contact surfaces
  • Floors, walls and equipment not wiped from grease build-up

Willie’s also needs to have smooth cleanable surfaces instead of wood and an enclosed BBQ area to avoid flies.

It has until Dec. 31 to be in compliance or could face a shutdown.

We checked to see what progress was being made, but upon walking in flies were buzzing where the meat was being chopped.

We wanted to talk to owner Willie Gonzalez but he was not available.

The owner's daughter Melissa did call after we left and spoke for 20 minutes about the restaurant's issues.

She shared some of the health issues her dad is facing and said it has been a challenging time.

We’re keeping the door open for Melissa to show any progress being made and will continue to request health inspection reports for the restaurant.

And that's Food 4 Thought.
