U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers on Sunday discovered more than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside a shipment of serrano peppers at the Pharr International Bridge.

CBP officers working at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility selected a tractor-trailer entering the country for an inspection.

“After physically inspecting the shipment, officers extracted 1,859 packages of alleged methamphetamine weighing 2,155.02 pounds … concealed within the shipment of peppers,” CBP said in a news release.

CBP seized the drugs and Homeland Security Investigations special agents initiated a criminal investigation.

A search of federal court records for the relevant time period didn’t immediately return a criminal complaint filed against anyone in the case.

CBP did not mention the tractor-trailer’s driver in the news release.

Carlos Rodriguez, port director for the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, said CBP remains vigilant in stopping drug smuggling attempts.

“Our CBP officers continue to remain vigilant and intercepted this massive methamphetamine load, preventing it from reaching American streets,” Rodriguez said in the release.

No other information was immediately released.
