BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A shred event was held Saturday in Brownsville by the Better Business Bureau.
Attendees had the opportunity to bring documents that could have personal information and didn't feel safe just tossing them in the trash.
Documents such as tax records and credit card statements were shredded in an industrial truck.
Organizers of the event stated this is a good way to protect the community from fraud and identity theft.
"It's very important to shred all the important documentation that has your personal information, especially junk mail," said Hilda Martinez, Better Business Bureau President. "Sometimes you get credit card offers in the mail and it could be possible there might be a scammer that might pick up that application with your personal information. You need to shred stuff that has anything that identifies who you are."
The Better Business Bureau also accepted electronic waste such as C-Drives and computer storage.
