Athlete of the Week: Jordan Brewster

PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Jordan Brewster committed to The University of Incarnate Word to continue his football career during a senior season that has been a rollercoaster of a ride.

Since stepping between the sidelines, the PSJA North offensive lineman has been one of the most feared and decorated Rio Grande Valley linemen.

However, Week 1 of the 2024 season took a turn for Brewster and his family.

"Play seven. We counted the plays," said Jim Brewster, Jordan's father. "Five pancake blocks, and on that seventh play, the world changes for you."

The Raiders kicked off their season against San Benito on the road. While PSJA North went on to win big in the second half, Jordan was unable to finish the game with a knee injury.

Jordan said, "Some guy dove on my knee, and then when I was on the ground, I was hoping that nothing happened, but I heard four pops. I was like, 'Oh that’s not right.'"

"You’re hoping and praying that it’s just a stinger or it’s just something minor that he’s gonna get up and go to the bench for a little while and then go back to the field," Melissa Brewster, Jordan's mother, said.

The four pops Jordan heard were confirmed to be a medial collateral ligament (MCL) and meniscus tear in his right knee. Upon hearing the news, Brewster knew his senior season was over.

The news weighed heavy on the entire Brewster family.

Jim said, "We knew it was sitting hard on him. His identity was football. His mother and I cried. We know he cried because no matter how big he is, he's still our baby."

Instead of letting the injury negatively affect him, Jordan went back to work. He has since been rehabbing his knee as he awaits one final 'clean-up' surgery.

While he cannot physically play football this year, he has found other ways to impact the game for his team.

Jordan said, "I watch as much film as probably the coaches. I go tell my guys what’s going on, and during the games, I’ll have a headset on, and then I’ll be hearing what the coaches want me to tell the players and stuff like that."

Brewster will be back at 100% before he steps on campus at Incarnate Word. He said while his senior season may have been cut short, he is thankful and hungry to prove himself at the Division I level.

"I’m gonna go in there, work every day, put my head down, and try to get to first team," Jordan said. "Hopefully, all God-willing, I'll just show out and show everybody what could’ve happened this senior year."

Brewster and the PSJA North Raiders get set to host Palmview in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Friday, Nov. 15.
