2024 RGV HS Girls Basketball Players to Watch

The 2024-25 Texas high school girls basketball season is in full swing with several of the Valley’s teams already entering district play. RGVSports.com staff compiled a list of some of the top players to watch this season.

D’Arrah Howard, Brownsville Lopez

Howard is one of the most well-rounded players in Brownsville. Howard has helped the Lobos to the playoffs the last two seasons. Along with Sophia Carrizales, the Lobos should be challenging for a District 32-5A title.

Jiselle Montemayor, Harlingen South

Montemayor already hit 1,000 points for the Hawks. The junior is good for at least 12 ppg and will be pivotal for Harlingen South in the race for District 32-5A. Senior Serena Cano is also another poised player for the Hawks.

Sarah Sanusi, Harlingen High

Sanusi is easily one of the most athletic girl hoopers in the Valley. The sophomore is averaging over 17 points a game. Watch out also for Lola Tamez on the Cardinals.

Brianna Barnes, Brownsville Veterans

Barnes leads a solid group of Charger seniors that are making the move up to 6A this season. Barnes can slash and shoot. Keep an eye on fellow senior Brianna Brackhahn and junior Tatiana Mercado.

Rianna Gonzalez, La Feria

Gonzalez was the Valley Morning Star’s co-newcomer when she was a freshman. She’s a senior now and along with guards Reandra Castillo, Danyelle Saldivar and Alexandra Torres have grown up in the program and have taken out some strong 5A teams so this season.

Natali Lozano, Los Fresnos

Lozano is another co-newcomer on this list. The Falcons will need her and other young players on their team to make it to the playoffs in the always competitive District 32-6A.

Seanah Mireles, Brownsville St. Joseph

Mireles is one of the best sophomores in Brownsville after breaking out last season. The Bloodhounds will need her experience from last along with senior Mia Villarreal in a tough TAPPS district.

Bre Nelson, Brownsville Pace

Nelson is averaging over 12 points an outing so far this season for the Vikings. Nelson is going to be important for Pace in a wide-open race for the playoff spots in 32-5A.

Isabel Magallenes, Weslaco High

Flash Magallenes is one of the best 3-point shooters in the Valley and has been draining them since her freshman year. Fellow junior Drya Arredondo is a baller and will help the Panthers go for back-to-back district titles, in a new district, 31-6A.

Angie Reyes, San Benito

Reyes is probably the best all-around player in the Valley, she can shoot, rebound and drop dimes. Reyes is averaging 17 ppg so far. Seniors Jade Maya and Valerie Vela will also be important in 32-6A for the Greyhounds.

Lorraine Perez, Brownsville Rivera

Perez has been one of the Raiders best players and now with the move to 32-5A, along with her teammates – the Raiders have a shot at the playoffs in 32-5A after missing out in 32-6A the last two seasons.

Emily Molina, Rio Hondo

Molina split the newcomer award with La Feria’s Gonzalez and has also continued to improve. Molina and the Bobcats are one of the best sub-5A teams in the Valley. There are some talented Bobcats to also watch out for.

GG Betancourt, Edinburg Vela

Another one of the Valley’s most athletic hoopers, Betancourt has played in some big games for the SaberCats and is putting up 19 ppg this season.

Madison Borjas, McAllen Memorial

There are many talented point guards on this list, but none as tricky of a finisher as the left-handed Borjas. The senior is averaging 12 ppg for the Mustangs.

Ebonie Chatman, Sharyland Pioneer

The Monitor’s newcomer of the year, last season is dropping 20 a game so far as a senior. Chatman and seniors Kassandra Garcia and Anika Fleischmann make up one the best 3-player combinations in the Valley.

Yuri Perez, Edinburg High

The Bobcats are reloading after having the best team in the Valley last year and Perez is leading them in scoring with 20 a game. Perez is going to be tough to stop in 31-6A.

Alyssa Cantu, McAllen Rowe

The Warriors are off to a really strong start and Cantu, a senior, has been one of the best in the Valley. Cantu can shoot, finish and play solid defense and also watch out for Silah Flores and Valentina Saldivar who can also score big any night.

Nicole Flores, La Joya Palmview

Flores is averaging 19 points a game for the defending District 30-5A champs as they are off to a strong. Senior Mia Rojas is also a terrific all-around player who is averaging 13 ppg.

Riley McClaugherty, Harvest Christian

McClaugherty is the only senior on the back-to-back TAPPS 1A state champions, but the Eagles have already started off strong taking down some strong 6A teams. Junior Jaime Gonzalez is also one to keep an eye on as the Eagles attempt a three-peat.

Alexandra Gonzalez, PSJA North

District 31-5A is loaded and the Raiders are going to be competing for those playoff spots and maybe even a title against the likes of Edinburg Vela, McAllen Rowe, McAllen Memorial, Sharyland Pioneer, etc, and that is because of players like Gonzalez and Madison Stanfield.
