MCALLEN, Texas – During the presidential election campaign, President Trump shocked the international trade community by threatening to impose a 25 percent tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada.

How bad would that be for the U.S.-Mexico border region? Who better to ask than longtime Rio Grande Valley-based customs broker Jorge Torres?

The president and founder of InterLink Trade Services sat down for an in-depth conversation about tariffs with Steve Taylor, editor and publisher of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service.

Torres was also a guest speaker on a webinar held recently by CITTA Brokerage Company of Utah. Asked on the webinar what the import-export community thinks of 25 percent tariffs, Torres said:

“As you can imagine, there’s a big concern and a big worry about this potential tariffs implemented because it’s going to have a major financial impact on importers. These are costs that importers cannot absorb 100 percent. They will have to pass it along to the consumer, which will create an inflationary situation.”

Torres added: “So, right now, a lot of companies, which we will elaborate later on, are trying to work different plans on how to mitigate the financial impact of these tariffs. Obviously, there’s a lot of nervousness and stress from entities. I’ve been talking to many companies about this situation. Unfortunately, we don’t have crystal ball. There’s a lot of unknowns.”
