RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — With a big winter blast headed to Rio Grande Valley, many schools are preparing in advance and announcing potential school start delays.
According to ValleyCentral Chief Meteorologist Bryan Hale, the cold front, or leading edge of Canadian air, will slip through the Valley on Saturday.
He added, that this front will allow a flood of cold air to surge south across the Valley and have temperatures drop off 20 degrees by Sunday.
It is predicted that by Tuesday night the mercury will drop to freezing, or a bit below, and stay there through Wednesday morning providing conditions for a hard freeze.
The following schools in the Valley have announced their closures and/or delays:
Hidalgo County:
McAllen ISD
The McAllen Independent School District has announced it will delay its school times on Tuesday, Jan. 21 due to the cold weather. The delayed school times are the following:
- Elementary schools will begin at 8:50 a.m.
- Middle schools will begin at 9 a.m.
- High schools will begin at 9:15 a.m.
Staff will report at their regularly scheduled time. For Wednesday, Jan. 22 McAllen ISD will monitor the weather and provide updates if schools will be delayed for Wed.
