Valley continuing to face 'moderate' air pollution

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Recent data shows air quality continues to be an issue for some of the Valley's biggest cities, where elevated levels of pollution may affect breathing and overall quality of life.

According to the U.S. Air Quality Index, or AQI, the cities of McAllen, Harlingen, and Brownsville have been sitting around 60 on the scale at “moderate” for the last two months, which may make it difficult for some to spend time outdoors.

The pollution comes from irritants like construction, dust, and smog blowing in from Mexico. Director Mary López with South Texas Health System says these factors can irritate the upper respiratory system, your nose and throat, as well as your eyes.

She shares how you can protect yourself throughout the day.

"[I recommending that] you stay indoors," López said. "Try to stay away from any activity outdoors, because that will irritate it more. So, make sure that your doors and your windows are closed. You have the air conditioner on, you know, so you can have a circulation of air within your home.”

She adds that children and seniors are usually those most at risk for irritation.
