HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Valley Baptist School of Vocational Nursing announced a donation of over 2,000 boxes of cereal to the Food Bank of the RGV.

According to Valley Baptist Health System's news release, the staff and students from the LVN school collected 2,250 boxes of cereal during the annual Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive.

The boxes were collected on behalf of the food bank to help residents throughout the Rio Grande Valley who are struggling with hunger and food insecurity, the news release stated.

Valley Baptist Health System said nearly one in two children in the Rio Grande Valley live at or below the federal poverty level.

The summer is difficult for families when children are out of school. Local school districts work hard to establish programs designed to offer healthy meals to children away from the classroom, but there is still significant need for donations.

The Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive donation pickup will be held on Friday, June 28 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Valley Baptist LVN Nursing School located at the corner of Vela Drive and N. Ed Carey.
