TxDOT’s Pharr District engineer Pete Alvarez gives update on state highway that connects to SpaceX

KENEDY COUNTY, Texas – The Texas Department of Transportation’s Pharr District engineer, Pete Alvarez, has given an update on improving the one and only State Highway that connects to SpaceX at Boca Chica.

Alvarez spoke about the project at a TxDOT groundbreaking ceremony for upgrading US 77 to interstate standard in Kenedy County.

“State Highway 4, we just completed an emergency contract that basically rehabilitated approximately four miles of State Highway 4. A project was recently awarded to rehabilitate nine additional miles. That project is scheduled to start construction later on this summer,” Alvarez said.

“Once that project is complete… we have already identified other future needs such as Super 2, who basically means an additional passing lane is a project that’s in the works. We’re doing the environmental schematic for it.”

Asked if there is anything else he would like to add, Alvarez said: “The Rio Grande Valley is growing by leaps and bounds. The demand that we have on our transportation infrastructure is second to none. We will continue to work with the elected officials in our region to identify the needs, develop projects and deliver these projects.

“Our goal is to stay ahead of the game by building additional infrastructure ahead of the curve will ensure, or minimize the risk, if you will. At the end of the day, we will continue to build the infrastructure that’s needed in the Valley. improving safety connectivity and mobility.”

Alvarez added: “The public plays a vital role in letting us know what issues and concerns they have. We welcome your comments and your concerns because we’re here to serve and I take great pride in saying customer service is important to TxDOT.  It’s important to me on a personal level to ensure that we’re delivering that transportation system needed for our Pharr District.”
