STHS informational program on coronary artery disease to air on NBC23

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — South Texas Health System is raising awareness against coronary artery disease through its latest episode of "South Texas Healthy Living" on NBC23.

The program will air at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 on NBC23 and will provide insight on the causes, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment of coronary artery disease and highlight important prevention advice.

Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease and accounts for approximately 610,000 deaths annually in the United States, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with about one in 20 U.S. adults age 20 and older having the life threatening disease.

The risk factors include excess weight or obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. These are health issues that are prevalent in the Rio Grande Valley.

"Along with recognizing the risk factors of coronary artery disease early, it's imperative that people take precautions to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease and improve their overall heart health," Tom Castaneda, STHS director of marketing and public relations, said.
