Simply broth-taking: Ramen at 10 Mas Seis in McAllen

McALLEN — 10 Mas Seis, a ramen restaurant hidden near McAllen’s downtown area, not only serves flavorful ramen but cooks up a variety baos, burgers, hotdogs and pizzas that are sure to hit the spot for any kind of occasion.

The Rio Grande Valley is currently experiencing its yearly few couple of weeks of winter-like conditions, and what wouldn’t be better right now than some warm soup to keep our bodies full and warm.

After eating bowls of menudo or pozole during the holiday season, you might want to switch it up and eat a different kind of soup.

If you’re a loyal South Texas Flavor reader, you might recall that I’ve said in past columns that I’m not a soup kind of fella. After trying places such as Lê Pho House, I’ve been gradually more open to soups.

And I’ll finally admit it, after trying the ramen at 10 Mas Seis, I am officially on #teamsoup.

Going to the restaurant right after lunch rush hour, it was still a bit packed so I can only imagine how packed it gets during the weekends.

The restaurant itself has a unique structure with plenty of windows, an upstairs area and the kitchen itself being outside in a food truck.

The waiter provided great service, which went well with the vibe inside the restaurant —laid back and friendly.

The menu is short, simple and gets to the point. I came for the ramen but they also serve burgers, hot dogs, pizza, wings and tender. The waiter told me they serve brunch on the weekends with a completely different menu.

I ordered the spicy Beef Ramen, which had good and meaty sized pieces of beef, green onion, menma, which is dried sliced bamboo shoots, roasted corn, cilantro, naruto maki or Japanese fish cake, sesame seeds, an egg and I added gyozas to it. It was about $18 with the gyozas added.

I decided to also get an appetizer and wanted to try the Bao buns. They had two unique bao buns that caught my eye which were the fried chicken and smash burger.

The baos came out looking a bit complicated due to all the other ingredients that came with it. From what I can tell it had small slices of carrots, green onion, cilantro, sesame seeds and this tasty sauce. You kind of have to really just go at it and not worry about the messiness or stuff falling apart. For $10 you can get two baos.

The baos were delicious. The fried chicken had a distinctive taste and had a bit of spicy to it, which was good. All the toppings mixed well, especially with the smash burger. The burger and the cheese really stood out from the two baos. The burger patty was good, I might come back and get a regular smash burger just from the bao I ate.

Out came the ramen in a huge bowl, and it looked delicious. Like something out of an anime show.

Not even knowing where to start, I drank a spoonful of broth, and it was love at first sip. The broth carried so much taste which foreshadowed to all the other great flavors in the ramen.

The noodles were hidden at the very bottom with all the corn, green onions, beef and gyozas on top of it.

Everything was delicious, from the noodles to the simple corn in it, which the ramen had lots of.

The beef was tender and carried a lot of flavor, especially in the broth.

My favorite item besides the broth was the gyozas that I added. I’ve never had gyozas in ramen but it is now something i’ll also look to add if possible. The gyozas itself was great and had a real good crunch to it. Mixed with the broth and especially dipping it after every bite, it was a tasty combo.

At the end of the meal, the waiter offered a free cup of hot chocolate and a piece of chocolate cake. He didn’t have to at all but that nice gesture really topped off the great customer service he provided for me.

If you’re having a quick lunch or wanting to go on a date or have dinner with friends, the restaurant is the perfect place for any of those occasions, even with options for picky eaters that don’t like ramen.
