Weslaco police place middle school on 'secure' after threat

WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A Weslaco middle school was put on secure Thursday afternoon after allegedly receiving a threatening call from a student.

At approximately 12:56 p.m. the Weslaco Police Department received a call from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department regarding a call from a student who stated they had a gun in their backpack and hung up, according to a release.

The call was pinged to Mary Hodge Middle School where officers placed the school on 'secure' for the safety of students and staff.

After an extensive search of the school and investigation were conducted, the call was then pinged to Starr County.

"Safety and security are our utmost priorities. We take any threats against our educational institutions very seriously, and we are committed to ensuring the well-being of all students and staff," Weslaco police said in a statement.

Police say they are monitoring the situation closely.
