BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — If you live in the lower Valley, chances are you have seen some scattered showers this afternoon.

Forecaster Craig Verley says there is a 50% chance of rain for this afternoon with scattered showers across the Valley.

These downpours are expected to continue throughout the afternoon.

While the rain is predominantly in the lower Valley at the moment, forecasters say it will likely be heading to Hidalgo County later today.

ValleyCentral urges drivers to stay vigilant and alert on the roadways, as some have reported it is difficult to see during the heavy downpours in Brownsville.

Additionally, the National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for nine Valley areas to advise residents about the possibility of tropical funnel clouds and landspouts.

What is a landspout?

As of 9:13 a.m. Wednesday, a special weather statement has been issued for the cities of Sarita, Raymondville, Brownsville, Harlingen, Port Mansfield, Port Isabel, Laguna Vista, South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beach.

“The combination of light winds and increased tropical moisture will make atmospheric conditions favorable for the development of weak tropical funnels or landspouts today (especially this morning into this afternoon),” the statement reads. “Most of these funnel clouds will be short lived and usually do not touch the ground. However, you should be prepared to seek shelter in the event a funnel does reach the ground in the form of a landspout.”
