Remaining dogs rescued from Brownsville home, 2 euthanized

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — All 17 dogs found at a Brownsville home Thursday were rescued by the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center.

Eight of the dogs that were in severe condition were taken by Animal Control on Thursday morning. The remaining nine were surrendered by the owner the following day.

Upon examination, the dogs showed signs of malnutrition, skin infections and distemper virus, for which there is no specific treatment.

Two of the dogs had to be euthanized due to the severity of their condition.

“Some of the conditions of the animals were so grave that we had to euthanize two immediately," said Brownsville Deputy Director of Health, Wellness and Animal Services, Antonio Caldwell. "The others, we are hopeful that through a very good treatment plan that we can get them to health and get them to rescue groups."

The vet at Boca Chica Animal Hospital, Adriana Martinez-Peña, who is treating the dogs is hopeful for their recovery.

She states all the dogs have been dewormed and vaccinated.

The shelter intends to put them up for adoption once they are fully recovered.

Caldwell is already in talks with local rescue organizations.

The dogs are isolated and being kept for observation for 14 days to ensure recovery.
