PROGRESO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of Progreso swore in its new Mayor and Councilman on Monday.

Hugo Gamboa was elected as Mayor and was sworn in by a judge who served with him in Iraq.

A special election was held because former Progreso Mayor Gerardo "Jerry" Alanis resigned due to being arrested on drug charges. His brother, Assistant City Manager Frank Alanis was also indicted in that charge.

"We had a lot of people that came out to vote that hadn't voted in a long time," said Gamboa. "I think the community was ready for a change and now we're gonna focus on that change so the community can come together and make a better town."

Sandra Estrada was also sworn in and will fill the seat of City Council Member Place 2.
