BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Two new pickleball courts at Pedro Benavides County Park near Brownsville are now open.
County leaders celebrated the grand opening the new courts Monday morning with a ribbon cutting.
The project came into fruition after Cameron County Commissioner Sofia Benavides saw an increase in popularity of the sport.
"I found out that they [pickleball courts] were really spread all over. So, I went ahead and started working towards getting funding for one and this is the result of that," Benavides said.
The $183,000 project features two 20x40 pickleball courts, a canopy shade structure, rest areas and picnic tables.
"We want to ensure that everybody has an opportunity to come out here and enjoy themselves," Benavides continued. "These pickleball courts will provide a wonderful opportunity for our community to stay active and enjoy the outdoors."
Pedro Benavides County Park is located on 2055 S. Browne Ave. near Brownsville.
The park features sport fields and courts, nature trails, playgrounds and picnic areas.
