PD: Out-of-state teen posted threats toward McAllen, Edinburg school districts

HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) - A social media threat from out-of-state toward schools in the McAllen and Edinburg school district brought about investigation by school police, local police and federal agencies.

McAllen ISD spokesman Mark May confirmed with us that a juvenile was taken into custody.

In a statement, McAllen ISD said the suspect, "admitted to making the post as a joke. He has no ties to McAllen ISD. He admitted to randomly picking those schools through a Google search."

But the suspect as of 6:50 pm Saturday was said to be in police custody.

Edinburg CISD updated parents by text Saturday of an arrest made of an, "individual posting threats to local schools on social media."

ECISD said the district's police department was aware of a threatening message to local school districts on social media.

The district then announced its police department, local police, and the FBI were actively investigating and late Saturday afternoon sent a text to parents.

"ECISD Update: The individual posting threats to local schools on social media was arrested by the FBI. ECISD will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law."

Saturday evening the school district wrote, "after continued investigation by Edinburg CISD PD, local law enforcement, and the FBI, the threatening messages on social media were deemed to be not credible."

ECISD confirmed it was the same juvenile.

McAllen ISD said in a statement, "We ensure our McAllen ISD community that we take these sorts of threats and social media posts seriously. Charges will be pressed on any sort of threats. Local, state and federal agencies take these posts seriously and fully investigate."
