Overnight crash claims life of Rio Hondo teen

RIO HONDO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An 18-year-old boy died Friday night after a two-vehicle crash in Rio Hondo, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

At 8:30 p.m. Friday, a black Dodge Caravan, driven by a man, was attempting to make a left turn into a residence off N. Sam Houston Blvd when a silver Toyota Corolla, driven by 18-year-old Jose Juan Mendoza, was traveling above the posted speed limit southbound on Sam Houston Blvd and T-boned with the Dodge.

The dodge was occupied by one other passenger.

The driver and passenger of the Dodge were transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to DPS.

Mendoza, who was a resident of Rio Hondo, was also transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. 

Authorities noted that an open container was found in the front cargo area of the Toyota.

DPS Troopers are further investigating this fatal crash.
