And now there are 8.09 billion … and four.
Four Hidalgo County area families rang in the new year with new additions as the first babies of the year were delivered at local hospitals.
Baby Aubrielle Adelynn Muniz was born just five minutes into the new year at the Maternity Center at South Texas Health System McAllen on Wednesday.
“I just knew she would come on New Year’s Day,” said Aubrielle’s mom, Daniela Abigail Lopez, in a news release. “I was due January 7th, but I kept thinking ‘no, this little girl is coming sooner than that’ and, sure enough, here she is.”
After enduring labor for over 24 hours the Muniz family welcomed their baby girl who arrived weighing in at about 6 pounds and 6 ounces.
She was the bundle of joy her parents had been waiting for — their first baby.
“… Our little girl is here and she is perfect and we are so excited to finally get to hold her,” said Isaac Muniz, Aubrielle’s dad.
STHS also helped welcome in two other babies on New Year’s Day, including baby boy Angel who was born at 7:59 a.m. at STHS Edinburg and another baby boy who was born at 9:40 a.m. at STHS McAllen.
DHR Health also helped deliver one of the first babies of 2025.
Baby Dallas Anthony Legate was born at 12:10 a.m. at DHR Health Women’s Hospital in Edinburg weighing in at 7 pounds and 3 ounces.
Measuring at 20.75 inches, Dallas was delivered into the loving arms of his parents, Kalea and Austin Legate, who also received a gift basket with baby essentials, celebratory items and a gift card.
“It is with great pride that we celebrate the first baby of the year,” said Marissa Castañeda, senior executive vice president of DHR Health. “It is a special moment for the family and a cheerful time for our hospital.”
The newborns join an ever-growing population, which according to the U.S. Census Bureau has increased by 75 million people around the world in 2024, adding up to just over 8.09 billion as the world population.
