The city of McAllen announced Monday that officials will be replacing the traffic lights at every intersection from McColl Road to Bentsen Road.

The move is part of the city’s Vision Zero plan, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, equitable and healthy mobility for everyone, the city said in a news release.

The work begins Jan. 6 and will continue through the beginning of February.

“The improvements will include removing and replacing small signs, signal heads and replacing them with new ones which are brighter and more visible during the day and night,” the release stated. “Intersections will not be fully closed, but some lanes may be closed, causing delays at the intersection. Work at each intersection should take approximately one to two days, with some night work being done.”

The work includes a total of 13 intersections with 151 signal heads being replaced.

The city was awarded a Highway Safety Improvement grant from the Texas Department of Transportation for the Nolana Avenue improvement project.

The city is encouraging motorists to plan for additional travel time or to find alternate routes to avoid congestion in the area.
