Dr. Carlos Margo, dean of industry and economic development at South Texas College, has provided an update on the work of his department.
Margo wants more employers in the Rio Grande Valley to consider utilizing STC’s apprenticeship program. He said taking on apprenticeships can save money, improve productivity, and reduce the turnover of workers. He acknowledged the college has to do a better job of prompting the program.
“I would really like to double the number of participating employers in our apprenticeship programs. We’re at a little over 50. I would really like to double that in a year,” Margo said. “So, we’re having these community sessions and forums specifically for employers, to educate them, to let them know the value of training and apprenticeship programs.”
Margo gave an interview to the Rio Grande Guardian at the conclusion of the 3rd Annual South Texas College Workforce Summit. Margo served as emcee of the program.
Margo said he was pleased with the caliber of the guest speakers, including U.S. Department of Labor Regional Director Dudley Light and Desi Holmes, state apprenticeship director for the Texas Workforce Commission.
