Data Report: Sales Tax Revenue totals for RGV cities in 2024

McALLEN, Texas – Thanks to the latest postings from the Texas Comptroller’s Office, we now have all the sales tax revenue stats for 2024.

The Rio Grande Guardian, in collaboration with Allied Consulting Group, has analyzed the Comptroller’s latest data, which focused on December 2024. This allows for a review of 2024 as a whole.

Among cities in the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen came out on top, when measuring total revenue. Brownsville came in second, and Edinburg third. Harlingen was fourth and Pharr fifth.

When measuring percentage growth in 2024, Port Isabel came first, Hidalgo second, and Penitas third. Fourth was Mission, and fifth, San Juan.

Sales tax is a consumption tax levied on the sale of goods and services. It is important source of revenue for governments at the state and local levels. Texas imposes a 6.25 percent state sales and use tax on all retail sales, leases and rentals of most goods.  Local taxing jurisdictions (cities, counties, special purpose districts and transit authorities) can also impose up to 2 percent sales and use the tax for a maximum combined rate of 8.25 percent.
