Man who barricaded himself with woman, child, issued $220k bond

WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A man who barricaded himself, along with a woman and her child on Friday was arraigned Sunday morning.

Jesse Chavez was charged with assaulting a family member impeding breath, terroristic threats and continuous violence against a family member.

At 8 a.m. Friday, Mercedes police responded to a verbal argument in the area of Anacuitas and Vermont Avenue.

At the scene, authorities saw a man, later identified as Chavez, pull a woman back into the apartments. He refused to speak to police.

Assistance from the Weslaco Police Department and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene. Chavez was later arrested.

Police say the victims are safe.

Chavez is booked at the Weslaco City Jail and has a total bond of $220,000.

Additionally, a restraining order has been placed against Chavez.
