State District Judge Rose Guerra Reyna announced Thursday that she’ll be hanging up her robe at the end of her current term behind the bench, ending in 2026 the longest-serving tenure for a woman in her capacity.

After giving it some thought, Reyna said in a news release that she will not be seeking reelection after 28 years of service, indicating it was a difficult decision to make.

“While this decision was not an easy one, I believe the time is right to step away and allow a new generation of leadership to continue serving our community,” Reyna said in the release. “I encourage anyone interested in being a public servant as a district court judge to run. It is the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Since her first election victory on Jan. 1, 1999, Reyna has presided over the 206th Judicial District Court and has run unopposed, which she attributes to the respect she’s earned from the judicial community and public.

Reyna states in the release that she never imagined the journey she’d take after being elected, adding that it was filled with challenges, growth and the privilege of ensuring justice is served.

“I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and for the opportunity to uphold the law with fairness and integrity,” she said.

The judge has overseen thousands of cases, helped guide attorneys beginning their careers and furthered implementation of initiatives intended to improve judicial efficiency and access to justice.

According to the release, Reyna’s current term will conclude on Dec. 31, 2026, and will continue to serve until that time.

“It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Hidalgo County, Texas as a district court judge,” Reyna added. “I look forward to the next chapter of my life, confident that the court will remain in capable hands.”

She also credited her family, colleagues, court staff, attorneys and the citizens of Hidalgo County for supporting her.
