Hurricane Beryl set to barrel west as a category 3 storm

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Hurricane season is getting busy fast as there is one hurricane and two areas of development in play all at once from the Atlantic to the Yucatan Peninsula.

Hurricane Beryl is strong and fast moving west at 20 mph. This storm is expected to become a category 3, a major hurricane, by Monday as it plows west. The seven day track puts a diminished hurricane Beryl just kissing the Yucatan Peninsula by Friday of next week.

Another area of potential tropical storm development is churning way out in the far eastern Atlantic but with a 70% chance of becoming stronger and moving west in the direction of the Caribbean.

Last but not least, is Invest 94, which is a broad area of low pressure over the Yucatan right now. This area of low pressure stands a 50% of developing into a tropical depression or storm before making landfall along the east coast of Mexico roughly 400 miles south, or more, of the Rio Grande Valley. As it travels west/northwest it will push moisture toward Deep South Texas and bring a decent chance for rain Sunday.

Right now there are no threats to the Valley but Beryl is worth watching next week if it stays the course toward the Yucatan.
