WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Work has begun on the Precinct 1 Hike & Bike Trail, according to Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes

Fuentes said it is a portion of a county-wide system that will eventually link several Hidalgo County communities.

“This has been a long-term project, and we are thrilled to see it coming to fruition," Fuentes said. "I want to especially thank all our community partners who have been working in unity to make this possible. My staff is happy to offer the media a tour of the project."

The trail aims to offer a secure and easy means of transportation between Weslaco, Donna, Alamo, and San Juan, while also connecting to the current trails in Precinct 2, according to the news release.

Recreational activities for residents and visitors such as walking, jogging, biking, birdwatching, and enjoying nature will be available upon completion of the project. Along with tourism and a boost in economic growth.

Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, the proposed 16-mile multi-use trail will connect Weslaco to San Juan and also link to the existing Precinct 2 trails, creating a regional network of active transportation and recreation opportunities, according to the county's news release.

Five-million dollars has been allotted for the creation of the trail and in addition, County Judge Richard Cortez has also allocated $1 million to assist in the creation of these trails.
