Health advisory issued over Botox injections

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County Public Health issued a health advisory concerning Botox injections.

There have been reports of adverse effects after receiving injections of botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, across several states, including Texas, CCPH stated.

Those who have had injections by unlicensed or untrained individuals in a non-health care settings, such as spas or homes, between Nov. 4, 2023 and April 20 are asked to watch for the following symptoms: blurred vision, drooping of the eyelid, dry mouth, slurred speech, shortness of breath, fatigue and generalized weakness.

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health advisory after 22 people in 11 states reported adverse affects after receiving Botox injections.

"Botulism is the disease caused by botulinum toxin circulating in the blood and producing effects remotely from the injection site," the CDC stated. The CDC added that botulism is rare, but sometimes fatal.

Cameron County Public Health asks those who may be experiencing symptoms of botulism, including trouble swallowing or breathing, to see a doctor immediately.
