EDINBURG, Texas – Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. has been appointed to the board of directors of the National Civic League.

The appointment was made during the National League of Cities City Summit in Tampa, Florida.

The National Civic League was founded in 1894 by a group of civic leaders that included Theodore Roosevelt and Louis Brandeis. The League’s mission is to inspire, support, and recognize inclusive approaches to community decision-making, advancing civic engagement to create equitable and thriving communities.

Garza said the National Civic League has been at the forefront of promoting civic engagement for over 125 years. He said he is joining a distinguished group of civic leaders from across the country on the NCL board, including mayors from Rochester, New York, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“I am deeply honored to join the National Civic League Board of Directors and represent Edinburg on this national platform,” Mayor Garza said. “Serving alongside leaders from across the country is an incredible opportunity to exchange ideas and further our shared vision of creating more engaged, resilient communities. I look forward to contributing to the League’s vital mission of fostering civic engagement and celebrating innovation.”

Garza said that in his new role he will collaborate with fellow board members to provide organizational and fiscal guidance to the NCL president and staff. Board members are entrusted with the fiduciary responsibility of steering the organization toward a sustainable future through sound governance and financial management, he explained. This includes ensuring that the nonprofit has adequate resources to advance its mission of fostering civic engagement and building equitable, thriving communities.

Former members of the National Civic League board of directors include Henry Cisneros, the former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former mayor of San Antonio. Cisneros now serves as an honorary board member.

One of the cornerstones of the National Civic League’s work is its annual All-America City Award, which honors ten outstanding communities each year for excellence in civic engagement, local innovation, and cross-sector collaboration.  The City of Edinburg made history in June 2024 by securing its fourth All-America City title. Mayor Garza said at the time that this was testament to Edinburg’s commitment to civic innovation and collaboration.

Garza said that as part of his duties he is required to play an integral role in ensuring that the League continues to empower communities across the country to find success through civic engagement.

“Today, I was voted on by my peers to serve on the board of the National Civic League,” Mayor Garza said, in a posting on social media. “Founded in 1894, the National Civic League works to advance civic engagement and supports inclusive approaches to community decision-making. Very honored for this amazing opportunity to represent our city on the national level with other mayors and civic leaders working to improve the quality of life in our communities.”
