Final week to adopt a pet for free, say pet shelters

MISSION, Texas (ValleyCentral) — NBC 23 and hundreds of shelters across the country are teaming up to host Clear the Shelters.

It is a nationwide pet adoption drive helping animals in need find a loving home.

This is the last week you can go to a local shelter and adopt for free. So far this month 488 animals have been adopted across the Rio Grande Valley.

ValleyCentral spoke to the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society in Mission on what it's like to see a family come in and walk out with their new companion.

"Not only do you see the excitement in the animal's face, but you see the excitement in theirs," said Jennifer Vasquez, interim executive director of the RGV Humane Society. "We like to do adoption photos, so you kind of get that all in one picture, and then we share it with our team and make the announcement. It's just another beautiful soul leaving our shelter for a happy home."
