The project’s primary focus will be to bolster housing opportunities and improve walkability in the vicinity of the Central Station in downtown McAllen, the city's primary transit hub, according to the FTA announcement.

"This grant will not only enhance accessibility and mobility within our community but also pave the way for sustainable economic development and vibrant neighborhoods," said Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz.

The grant was awarded to the City of McAllen and will help with the planning of TOD initiatives around two key transit stations linked by four local bus routes, including a proposed BRT corridor.

In addition, the plan will explore avenues for mixed-use development and establish multimodal connections to the newly constructed North Transfer Station.
