Family grieving loss of 14-year-old teen killed in New Year's Day crash

MISSION, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A family in Mission is making funeral arrangements after the sudden loss of their loved one.

14-year-old Ashley Fuentes died from her injuries after a crash on New Year's Day in Hidalgo County.

At approximately 1:22 a.m., Ashley and her family were struck by a Camaro in rural Mission. Investigators say the Camaro was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Lilia Fuentes, Ashley's aunt, says Ashley's two sisters are still in the hospital.

The family was planning to have Ashley's quinceanera in May. Now, they are working on raising funeral expenses.

The community is rallying behind the family in their time of need with local businesses, neighbors and churches holding fundraisers for the family.

Ashley was a 9th grader at Lincoln Juarez High School in Citrus City. The family says that the school district has been very helpful as well.

In a statement, La Joya Independent School District said, "Our community is here, together, to support Ashley's family and friends, in their time of need and loss. Our district counselors will be available to provide emotional support and assistance to anyone in need and will be on campuses to provide support as needed.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety has not provided an update on the investigation of the crash.

A Zumbathon will also be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Club Transformation located at 3304 W. 5 Mile Rd. in Mission. A $10 donation or any kind of contribution is encouraged to help the family.

On Sunday, a chicken plate sale will be held in the same business plaza beginning at 10 a.m.

The family also has a GoFundMe set up online.
