EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Edinburg Police Department is hosting a news conference this afternoon to address the officer-involved shooting that took place Tuesday.

City of Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala will speak to the media at 4 p.m. to detail the fatal shooting.

Background

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of El Paso Street following reports of a man allegedly threatening his neighbor.

The man was identified as 58-year-old Felipe Zuniga.

Zuniga brandished his weapon and allegedly pointed it at officers when confronted. In that moment, officers shot at Zuniga who then barricaded himself in his home.

A release shared by the police department stated that authorities then called in a SWAT team to establish a perimeter around Zuniga's home. The SWAT team also attempted to negotiate with Zuniga by breaking into the home and speaking with him through a phone they attached to vehicle that entered the building.

While attempting to conduct this operation, authorities say Zuniga pointed his weapon at a SWAT team member, leading an officer to fire his weapon and strike Zuniga.

Zuniga was treated at the scene but later died of his injuries at DHR.

The case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
