DPS investigates after Weslaco ISD school bus struck pedestrian

WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Public Safety and Weslaco police are investigating an auto-pedestrian accident involving a district school bus.

Authorities confirm the accident happened at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday on FM 493 and Hernandez Road in rural Donna.

According to DPS, a man was struck as he was walking eastbound on the southside of Hernandez Road.

The Weslaco Independent School District confirmed the bus did not carry students at the time of the accident.

"Weslaco ISD would like to extend our sympathies to all those involved in the accident during this difficult time," the district announced.

The school district is cooperating with DPS and police to move forward with the investigation.

"Safety is our highest priority and we will implement any necessary measures to ensure the safety of our students, staff and the community as we move forward," Weslaco ISD said.

The driver of the school bus was not injured. The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
