CrossFit Games athlete drowns during swimming event in Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A competitor in the 2024 CrossFit Games drowned to death in the Marine Creek Reservoir Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m. Thursday during the swimming portion of individual event No. 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games, according to CBS News.

News outlets are reporting that the Fort Worth Fire Department was called to help the Fort Worth Police Department after the person went underwater and did not come up.

Craig Trojacek, an FWFD spokesperson, spoke with CBS News and said no one from the fire department was on the scene before they arrived.

Fort Worth Police recovered the body of the athlete about an hour later, CBS reported.

The CrossFit Games issued the following statement confirming the drowning:

"CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of a CrossFit Games competitor during the swimming portion of Individual Event 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games."

CrossFit says they are cooperating with local authorities and doing what they can to support the family.

The remainder of Thursday's events were suspended.

"The well-being of competitors is our first priority and we are heartbroken by this tragic event," CrossFit stated.
