Cities across the Valley initiate mosquito prevention

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cities across the Rio Grande Valley are being proactive in controlling the mosquito population after heavy rainfall.

The City of San Benito is actively spraying for mosquitos and using larvicide when there is a spike in mosquito activity or consecutive days without rain.

City officials say residents can help control the mosquito population with the following:

  • Cleaning the birdbath once a week.
  • Protect and clean pools and ponds.
  • Fix water leaks.
  • Seal all water deposits.
  • Clean rain gutters.
  • Install screen on windows and doors.
  • Drain standing water in buckets, tires and flower pots.
  • Keep the grass short.

The city will continue to actively spray and use larvacide on standing water until the mosquito population decreases. All spraying will be conducted in its respective zones in the early morning or late at night, and the wind is calm.

The City of Edinburg has also begun using larvicide in standing water to prevent mosquito infestations following the heavy rainfall.

The larvicide pills will be placed in stagnant water across the city throughout the week.

City officials with the City of McAllen have stated they will monitor weather conditions to initiate mosquito abatement activities.

They added that once weather conditions are favorable, they will deploy its Vector Control Team in a city-wide effort.
