MCALLEN, Texas – Pharr Economic Development Corporation hopes to announce a big manufacturing project within the next few months that will bring 300 high paying jobs to the region.

Janie Cavazos, property and business development manager for Pharr EDC, gave brief details in a report to the South Texas Manufacturers Association.

The STMA held their monthly luncheon at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton in McAllen.

“We do have an announcement to make, hopefully… Mr. (Victor) Perez, our president and CEO, has not authorized me to say anything yet but we will, hopefully in the next couple of months, be announcing a 700,000 square foot building for one customer,” Cavazos said.

“We are really excited about that because it’s going to bring in… my understanding is that within the next five years their projection is to grow at least 300 percent and they will be creating at least 300 jobs with this operation.”

Cavazos continued: “This will be high quality type of jobs that we’re looking at. So, STC plays an important role for us because we are counting on them to supply us with the workforce that this company is going to need.”

STC stands for South Texas College.

“If anyone has any questions, don’t ask me because I can’t tell you,” Cavazos joked.

In her report, Cavazos also spoke about the industrial parks currently under construction in Pharr and the impact of near-shoring.

“We currently have four industrial parks in Pharr. And we have about five industrial parks that we’re working on in Pharr. So that would total to at least four million square feet of industrial space. We’re really excited about that,” Cavazos said.

“We currently have one that just finished, 160,000 square feet. It was completely leased before it was completed. And they are currently under construction for an additional 150,000 square feet. That will be ready in May of this year.

“We do have another 100,000 (square foot building) that is going to get started in the next month or so.”

Cavazos added: “We are really excited because we do have a lot of companies that are currently… the near-shoring trend is something that has really brought a lot of attention to us, to our border. So, we are seeing a lot of interest because of that.”
